Match Preview

Tottenham have slipped to 6th in the table with their league forming taking a huge dip. The Champions League was always going to be a tough ask for them this season and it highlights their lack of depth in the squad.  The attention is clearly focused on the Champions League and the Premier League form has been lackluster at best. They’ve won 2 out of the last 5 games, both those victories coming in Europe. They’ve drawn 2 and lost 1 of the 3 league fixtures, dropping points against West Brom, Leicester and Watford. They are 4 points behind a Champions league place and a massive 18 points behind City with 25 collected from their 15 games. Wanyama and Alderweireld are both out injured and their defence isn’t performing at the same levels as it did last season. Spurs have lost just once at home this season with 3 wins and 3 draws. Those draws aren’t good enough when you compare them to the other top sides in the league, most have won at least 5 out of 7 home fixtures. They’ve struggled to score goals at home with sides seemingly able to park the bus against them. Games average just 2 goals with 1.29 for and 0.71 against. They need to find a way to break through sides, and Stoke will prove another tough challenge. Stoke ended a run of 4 games without a win by taking all 3 points against bottom of the league Swansea. They had to come from behind to do it, but that victory saw them climb to 13th in the table with 16 points, now 6 clear of the relegation places. They’ve lost 2, drawn 2 and won 1 of the last 5, but those results will be seen as disappointing with just 1 game against a side in the top half. They’ve picked up 5 points from 7 away games this year scoring 8 and conceding 15. That poor defensive record has plagued them all season, but has been particularly apparent on the road where they’ve conceded at more than 2 per game. The bulk  of those were scored by City and skew the results somewhat. With that game removed they’ve conceded 8 in 6, a much more respectable tally. They average 1.2 goals per game, split fairly evenly between home and away. They will struggle to score this season and Spurs have a decent defence, even with their players missing. It should be a tight game, but we expect Spurs to edge it.
